Riley gazed at the clock next to her bed for the tenth time in the past twenty minutes. She was mentally exhausted, yet her mind refused to shut down and let her rest. She closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep.
Crreeeak…
She sat up ramrod straight and listened in the darkness. She strained to hear any other sound out of place.
The crickets and frogs chirruped. Off in the distance a red fox cried out—exactly like a woman screaming. Then a scraping sound…so close.
The crickets and frogs abruptly stopped.
She held her breath, one, two, three, heartbeats.
The chirruping returned.
Slipping both legs out from under her covers, she placed her feet on the floor as soundlessly as possible. Slowly shifting her weight, she stood up and tiptoed to the door. She crept out of her room and headed for the stairs where she stopped and listened.
It was a moonless night, and she couldn’t see more than a few feet, but growing up in this house she felt comfortable moving in the near blinding darkness.
She moved onto the first stair and stopped. Making sure of her footing she skipped the next stair knowing it would squeak and gracefully landed on the one below. All the while keeping her hands away from the shaky banister that her dad had promised to fix years ago. She continued down the remining stairs, stepping only on the solid treads. She moved toward the front door. The security system wasn’t active. Had she set it before bed? She couldn’t remember. Cracking the door open she slipped out into the night.
Out of nowhere, a massive hand covered her mouth and an arm wrapped around her waist. She tried to scream, but the man yanked her back and knocked the wind from her lungs.

Lady Phoebe Collins backed into the alcove, stopping when she bumped against the floral wallpaper. She was safely hidden in the shadows, away from the ballroom and its dancing couples. She took the note from her reticule and her heart skipped a beat as she read the words written in a strong hand, “Meet me in the sitting room, two doors beyond the stairs, at half past eleven. —Fox.”
Putting the note back into her reticule, she smiled at the familiar form of address in the signature and moved down the hall to the specified room. Why did Foxington want to meet her? Was he having regrets about what had happened when they’d been snowed in on Christmas Eve? Or was he planning to continue what they’d started on that magical night? His nickname, “The Fox” implied an intimate relationship, and her pulse fluttered again at the thought. She walked down the hall, her mind going over every detail of the night they were trapped together by a snowstorm one year earlier.
Foxington approached offering to escort her home after a dinner party where Ravenstone had surprised everyone by asking Lady Lettice Durham, Foxington’s sister to marry him. The trip home had gone terribly wrong, an unexpected storm piling so much snow on the road that they’d had to unhitch the horses and finish the journey to Elkhorn Hall on horseback.
Foxington had taken her up behind him, and the intimacy of the situation had encompassed them, lingering after they’d arrived and been cared for by the intrepid housekeeper, Mrs. Brown. Food and dry clothing had been provided for everyone, including Foxington’s aunt, who had also been in the carriage as chaperone.
After Foxington’s aunt departed the room, Phoebe walked around the space, picking up pillows from the sofa and fluffing them, only to put one down before picking up another.
“I would say this evening was a success in regards to Lady Lettice and Lord Ravenstone. You accomplished what you set out to do. Your sister is now betrothed, and to a fine gentleman.” Phoebe looked up at Foxington with a smile.
The earl moved swiftly toward Phoebe, reached for the pillow she was holding to her chest, and threw it back onto the sofa before placing one arm around her waist. He cupped her cheek, bent down, and kissed her.
The urgency in his kiss surprised them both, and for a moment she didn’t react. Then, as if giving in to some inner debate her body relaxed against his, she returned the pressure of his lips, and her legs moved against the confines of her gown to arch slightly against him.
He paused slightly, then kissed her once more, gently. He set her back from him with his arms stiff and his breathing ragged.
“Phoebe?” he asked softly, his deep voice thick. With concern, she’d thought.
She stared at him, realizing he was just as shocked as she at their encounter.
“You—you kissed me,” she whispered.
“I certainly did.” A devilish grin quirked at his lips. “And by all accounts you kissed me back. Care for another one?”

“I’m hoping to build a family, one of my own,” Debbie said without thinking, then flushed, knowing Shaker had heard her. “This has all been a lot to deal with. I’m not planning on making any big decisions about my life this year, other than to get married. And I do have my own company to run, that I’ve put my heart and soul into.” The latter literally.
The buzzing feeling suddenly increased. Debbie struggled to her feet.
“What’s the matter?” Father John said, his brows knitting.
“I tell you, there’s something here!” came an insistent voice. “I can feel it.” Another young pastor came into view, agitated.
A large man was following him. This tall man stopped still, then swiveled his head to stare right at Debbie. “I feel it too.”
He knows. Somehow, he knows. Shaker!
There was no response.
“Go in the back, I’ll check the front.”
The young pastor hurried back in the direction he’d come. The tall man headed right for Debbie.
Shaker! Debbie headed for the door, making excuses to Father John of forgetting the plane was leaving early, anything to get to the door. But the tall man was faster and blocked her path.
Father John nodded. “I’ll hope to see you soon, Debbie, but not too soon. You take care of yourself, and please let me know if you change your mind. Bless you.” He turned and headed away. Debbie thought to call him back, but she knew it wouldn’t be any use. He might care about me, but he’s not going to save me from a demon hunter.
“Hello,” the tall man said. “Your name is Debbie?”
“You already know that,” Debbie said defensively. “Did you send those priests away?”
“Pastors,” the man corrected. “And yes. One is a kindly old man who just wants to help people. The other can feel the demon bound to you and would kill you where you stand, if I hadn’t shielded you.”
“Why would you do that? Who are you?”
“I’m an angel, of course.”

Grant the mystery man—a delicious mystery Shayla would like to unravel, piece by piece, layer by layer. Ah, but I can’t. I’m his boss. In a different lifetime, if we didn’t have the whole boss-employee obstacle going on…. No harm in looking, though, just a little, since he sat so close. She promised herself to keep her thoughts G-rated—okay, maybe PG-13. Grant had a talent with numbers and paid attention to detail. Also, he was a little shy and standoffish to a lot of people when it came to anything other than work. Shayla wondered where he sometimes went in his head, because, every now and then, his smile slipped from his face, just for a second, before being replaced with one a little harder. None of my business, she reminded herself.
She had really wanted to hug him this morning after seeing him so frustrated but decided it might be wiser and more appropriate to show him there were a few people on his side. Seeing him break things and try to be all strong and humorous about it made Shayla want to unravel the Grant mystery even more. It kind of hurt to watch him pretending to be fine, but all she could offer him was lunch and good conversation. Hopefully, Mr. Strong and Silent—Sydney called him that sometimes, although never to his face—knew Shayla and Sydney cared. And Shayla did care. Because he’s a friend. Just a friend.
Grant raised his soda in a toast. “To things not being worse,” he announced with a rueful half smile. “And, uh”—he cleared his throat—“to good company.” He nodded at Sydney, and when he met Shayla’s gaze, he held it. In his dark eyes, she saw hunger, wide-open desire, and about a million other things she couldn’t puzzle out. Grant looked at her that way sometimes, and she did her best to ignore it. He might have a small crush on her, or he could have a thing for petite, small-breasted girls possessing a great fashion sense.
Sydney broke the silence. “To good food and even better friends.” She clinked Grant’s glass, and Shayla came back to reality and smiled, pretending she wasn’t experiencing several different kinds of inappropriate thoughts and feelings for a sexy, complicated man who was her employee and also her friend. She needed to behave and remember things could never go any further than a panty-melting gaze.

Crouched behind a stand of bushes across the river from the Victorian mansion, the stranger surveyed his surroundings to ensure he wasn’t observed by a late- night visitor. He did his best work under the cover of night when people slept, secure in their dreams. By day, the place buzzed with people coming and going. By night, the pace slowed, as if the hotel took deep breaths and drifted into slumber, resting and recovering for the next sunrise. The shadows served as his allies, hiding his peculiarity from the locals. Night embraced him like a lover, keeping his secrets. Tonight, in the preternatural pause before the incoming storm, all was quiet, except for the call of an owl and the squeaks of nocturnal creatures. Predator and prey.
He’d waited a long time for this special child. With the specific family background he wanted, she was exactly what he needed. It would take time, but he could wait. Patience was one of the things he excelled at. That and taking children away from their homes. He had honed his skills, perfected his technique. But the timing was off and he needed to lay low. Bright-eyed and bushy tailed, as her husband would say, Tallulah Stewart slipped into the kitchen, flipped the switch for the coffee pot, and began to prep breakfast for her guests. As she sliced the homemade cinnamon bread, she smiled at the thought of the still sleeping Lucius, blissfully unaware of her activities. Ever since her darling daughter came into the world, Tallulah had become a morning lark and Lucius a night owl. With a twenty-four hour a day business like Hotel LaBelle, it was good they alternated shifts. No need for both of them to be exhausted. A huge bolt of lightning flashed, bathing the kitchen in bright light. Moments after, thunder shook the hotel. That was close.
Thank God Miriam takes after her father and sleeps through everything.
A frisson shimmied down her back.
Miriam. Something was wrong with Miriam.
Dread bloomed in her chest, and she struggled to breathe. Knife falling out of her numb hand, Tallulah ran to her child’s room.
Shadows draped the space over her daughter’s nest. Pillows and stuffed animals tilted at all angles and a small lump burrowed deep in the blankets. Tallulah let out a long sigh of relief. Hot or cold, that girl loved her blankets, the more the merrier. Active, even in her sleep, Miriam had been an early walker and climber. Despite parental efforts at containment, from eleven months of age on, each morning the little gymnast had been found on the other side of the bars of the crib. They had surrendered and converted the crib to a toddler bed. Tallulah tip-toed next to her precious bundle, gently slid a quilt back—and screamed.

“You want to pop up and get our usual’s, sugar?”
Paige jerked, banging her head under the counter. “Tiddle twat!” she muttered, rubbing her crown as she pushed slowly to her feet. The amusement in that familiar voice curled her toes, and her body reacted with the same warm flush she experienced every time she heard it. Before turning around, she tried to guess which Carlson brother this time had her fired up on all cylinders with just a few words. Her libido never failed to jump start when either man spoke to her, or assessed her with those dark brown eyes, or brushed his fingers against hers when she handed over a drink. The fact she experienced the same quick reaction to both men always left her flustered, and just a touch annoyed.
Pivoting, she aimed a smile at Troy and Trevor seated at the bar, her heart tripping at the sight of the two hottest city employees it’d been her pleasure to serve. Man candy. Hunk on a stick. Drool worthy. Panty melting. Hunk a hunk a burning…lust. Every one of those euphemisms described the brothers who were so far out of her league they may as well be on the moon. Unlike a few other regular patrons, neither man had ever made a pass at her, never even hinted one might be interested in rolling around on her bed for a few nights of hot, sweaty sex, but that hadn’t kept the fantasies from giving her more than one sleepless night.
“Tiddle twat? I must have really startled you.” Trevor, the one with the sexy face scruff and a twinkle in his eyes cocked his head and winked.
“You did. I didn’t hear you come up.” Glancing at Troy, she nodded, stretching her smile. “Detective. You two haven’t been by in a while.” Setting two glasses on the bar, she reached underneath and grabbed the whiskey. She knew her customers.
“Too many bad guys to track down. How have you been, Paige?” Troy asked, his low, deep voice sending a delightful shiver down her spine. If she didn’t know better, she’d think he wanted an honest answer and would care about her reply instead of delivering polite platitudes. Both men possessed that way about them, talking to you as if you mattered, as if they really wanted to hear what you had to say. Maybe that accounted for her continued, uncharacteristic responses to the brothers whenever they came in.
“I’m good, thanks.” Adding sour mix to the whiskey, she dropped in a slender straw and slid the drinks over. “At least we’re not being plagued with a serial killer, or some other such cretin. And spring break is still weeks away, so you don’t have those headaches to deal with yet.” A shadow crossed both men’s faces, Troy’s jaw clenching when she joked about a serial killer. “Have I missed something in the news?”

I live in the Midwest with my husband and our two dogs. I love dogs, enjoy spending time with my daughter, babysitting dogs and kids, reading and working puzzles.
