Shadow Embraced
(Haven #1)
Book Description:
No escape.
No escape.
Those words haunt Scar’s dreams. She thinks the creature that terrorises her while asleep isn’t real, but when she’s abducted and taken to a reform school meant to contain creatures too dangerous to function in society, she starts to wonder whether she isn’t some monster.
She turns to an underground fight club full of vampires, werewolves and witches established by the students to control her urges, and who is she kidding, she loves to fight.
When fighters begin to disappear, turning Scar into the prime suspect, she must race to prove her innocence before her true nature is exposed.
The only problem is that she’s not entirely sure she’s innocent.

Difficult characters to write
Some stories start with a small idea, a setting or a character. When I first thought of Shadow Embraced, I knew exactly who was going to tell the story of the world of Haven. 16-year-old Scarlet Devena (or Scar as she’s more commonly referred to) was a very feisty character who was always fighting for control of the story, and at times I actually felt as though she was the one taking control of the story rather than me, the writer, being the one telling her story.
I just wish I could say all of the characters were as easy to write as Scar, but that would be telling a lie. There was one character in particular who gave me a headache with trying to keep track of, Jynx Avery (or as she is more commonly known as to Scar as Snow). Throughout the story Jynx is Scar’s rival. Okay, that sounds like an easy role to play, so why was Jynx such a difficult character to write?
Shadow Embraced went through various drafts, which includes many different paths as well, before the story ended up as the final version. During the different versions Jynx took on different minor roles. In the beginning Jynx was only going to be some random girl Scar fought in a club at the beginning of the story, but for some reason I just could not let that girl go. That’s probably another reason why I could not just write Jynx out of the story. At some point I had no idea what I was going to do with Jynx that I had even thought about adding her to collateral damage (if I ever needed to).
In the end I was surprised at how well Jynx’s storyline fell into place with everything Scar was doing.
She might have been a difficult character to write, but she has to be one of my favourites. And every hero needs an arch nemesis just like Superman needs Lex Luthor, Scarlet needs Jynx.
