My Review:

Not Quite Mine (Not Quite #2) by Catherine Bybee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I first read a novel call Not Quite Dating by Catherine Bybee and really enjoyed the story and the authors writing. So when book two in this series was up I knew right away I had to read it. Catherine Bybee’s writing is really good, the story line and characters are well written this is one of those books when you sit down to start to read it you get so caught up in the story that before you know it your at the end.

In Not Quite Mine we start off at Jack and Jessie’s wedding from Not Quite Dating, and Katie and Dean are both the main characters in this novel. Katie who is Jack’s sister has always been a bit of a spoiled wild rich girl and Dean who is one of Jack’s best friends has always held some major feelings for Katie. Katie and Dean have a past that they kept a secret from everyone; part of the fun was the sneaking around. But when the relationship ended they both pretended to move on, each one thinking the other never really cared. As we get into this story we find out that they both held secrets from one another and really do still have some feeling for each other.

Right after the wedding Katie finds a 2 week old baby left in front of her door with a note asking her to take care of the baby as her own. Katie has no idea who the mother is and how she knew Katie couldn’t have children of her own. Of course she immediately falls in love with Savannah and decides she has to keep this a secret till she can find out more. Keeping this secret is going to be hard work for Katie especially since Dean is snooping around trying to figure out what is going on with Katie and why is she acting so different. Dean confronts her on her behaviour using the excuse he is keeping an eye on her for her brother Jack, he can tell Katie is hiding something.

There is so much more to this story then just romance it’s about letting go of your past, growing and the changes one goes through when there is someone more important than yourself. What happens when Dean finds out about Savannah, and then Katie’s mother seems to appear out of nowhere? Then to make things even harder is watching Dean with Savannah and knowing how great a father he would be?

This whole novel is fantastic, I loved reading about Jessie, Jack and Danny, and Gaylord Jack and Katie’s dad all the characters are so well written you cannot help but want more. I for one cannot wait for book 3 in this series.

I have rated Not Quite Mine a 4.5 stars and would recommend anyone reading my review to go pick up Not Quite Dating and Not Quite Mine. Catherine Bybee writing is one of the better romance authors I have read and love her writing style; she definitely is one of my favorite authors.

Excerpt:

Dean followed the pattern of awestruck men until he found her.

Bent over a railing on what would be one of the many ground floor suites, Katie’s short, cream-colored skirt rode midthigh. The sight of her slammed his breath from his lungs. Her long legs appeared to ride for miles and the four-inch heels extended them even farther.

Her butt flexed as she straightened and looked up to the ceiling. She reached above her head as if measuring the height of the room.

The memory of her stretching in bed, naked, after they’d made love swam in his mind.

Get a grip, Dean, he chided himself. Drowning in those memories would only lead to heartache. And he’d had his share of that, enough to last a lifetime.

“You need to wear a hat,” he all but yelled in her direction.

Katie jumped and swiveled in his direction. “Damn it, Dean, you scared me.” She brought a hand to her chest as if calming her heart from the shock of him being there.

“If an inspector were here, he’d shut me down if he caught you without a hard hat.”

He took two purposeful strides in her direction and thrust the hat in front of him. He avoided her personal space but couldn’t keep her floral scent from reaching his nose.

She always smelled like spring.
Dean wiggled the hat in his hand.
She sneered at it as if it were a snake. “Who else has worn that thing?”

“I have no idea.”
 “I’m not touching it.”
He rolled his eyes and let his arm fall. “You wear a hat, or get off my job site.”

Her mouth dropped. “You can’t fire me.”

“I’m not firing you, I’m telling you the rules. And those shoes have to go, too.”

She stuck out a hip and rested a hand on it. “Will an inspector shut you down for my shoes?”

He wanted to tell her yes, but he’d be lying. “The ground is uneven and there are nails everywhere. Twisting an ankle and contracting tetanus are the most likely by-product of stilettos on the site.”

Katie lifted a leg and examined her own shoe. Her skirt slid farther up her thighs.

Dean groaned.
“I’ve run from half a dozen paparazzi on the cobblestoned streets of Italy in heels like these. I’ll take my chances.”

He thrust the hat in her direction a second time and dismissed the footwear argument. “They’re your feet. The hat isn’t optional.”

After sniffing the air and finding it unsavory, Katie glanced at the top of his head. He read her thought before she managed to voice it.

“Has anyone else worn your hat?”
It had his name on it. No one would consider putting it atop his or her head. “No.”
A slow Southern smile met her lips. Avoiding a forgotten two-by-four, she shortened the space between them and stared at his hat.

This was not a fight he was going to win. He could insist she wear the hat in his hand, but knew he’d end up tossing her over his shoulder and removing her from the site because she wouldn’t wear it. It wasn’t that she was a snob, just particular about what touched her skin.

No matter how the hat ordeal played out, the men on his crew would be talking by the end of the day. Carrying her off the site or letting her wear his hat for the day…those were his options.

He mumbled under his breath and removed his hat before plunking it down on her stubborn head.

No technology to be seen, and iron is banned, thanks to a pact the humans have with the magical creatures who share their pre-industrial era world. In her t-shirt and torn jeans, Memory knows she's different, even before she performs impossible magic.

Her forgotten past holds dangerous secrets that will challenge everything she believes and risk the lives of everyone she loves.

Memory's Wake contains 44 black and white illustrations by the author and artist. Approx. 80,000 words or 320 pages in paperback.

My Review:

Memory's Wake (Memory's Wake Trilogy #1) by Selina Fenech
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really want to say the drawings in this book are fantastic; it really helped visualize the story and the character while reading Memory’s Wake. When I finished I went back and took another look as they are fantastic, not only is Selina a great artist she is a great author.

Memory’s Wake reminds me of the world that fairy tales are made out of and like I mentioned above the drawings only added to this fantastic story.

This story is a fantasy novel full of adventure and even some romance, right in the beginning we meet a young girl who somehow has appeared in this mystical land of Avall, Eloryn who is standing there when she appears has no idea how this young girl even got there. Eloryn who is on the run from the hunters because she used magic without authorization knows she must help the young girl or she could be hurt or killed. So they adventure begins. Eloryn name her new friend Memory, Eloryn and Memory have to work together to survive. During their adventure we meet Roen and Will who are some interesting character also.

Memory’s Wake is full of adventure, dragon’s, magic, wizards a mystical world awaits anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre.

I have rated Memory’s Wake a 3.5 star rating, and would recommend anyone who enjoys this genre to pick up a copy for yourself.

Excerpt:

Memory wiped her hands on her jeans, but gave up when it only made them dirtier. Resigned to eating even more dirt than she had already, she unwrapped the gum and popped it in her mouth.

The candy cherry flavor rushed across her tongue, unfamiliar. She turned to Eloryn. “So,Princess, what was that all about?” Memory realized that she hadn’t even known Avall was a monarchy.

Then again, she only knew the name of the place because Eloryn told her.

“It meant nothing.” Eloryn kept her eyes averted.

“It didn’t look like nothing.” The way Roen had grabbed Eloryn, moving her against her will, left Memory with a strange, ill feeling inside. She discarded it, filed away with all her other confusing emotions, and tried to judge Roen anew. She hated how handsome she found him, how she just wanted to touch that soft caramel hair, and how when he smiled, she couldn’t help but like him. It made it hard to say no to him, and left her wondering if she’d made the choice to go with him for the right reasons. Why was everyone she’d met so far so damn pretty! Amnesia or not, Memory knew pretty people lied too. Everyone lies, her heart told her.

Wow, learned something new about myself. Turns out I’m a cynic. Surprise.

My Review:

Just Good Friends by S.L. Siwik
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a debut novel for S.L. Siwik and I have to say I really enjoyed the authors writing. This story is a really good friendship/romance novel. S.L. writing was easy to read, the story flowed seamlessly, I really got caught up in this story and before I knew it I had read the entire book. The plot the story line and the character were all great, I hope there is more to come in this series as I think it was a fantastic read and loved all the other characters.

We meet Audrey who is working two jobs to pay the bills; she is basically living from paycheck to paycheck. She is a waitress during the day then at night stalk shelves at a local store. We find out the Audrey comes from a pretty well off family but left home when she was 18 to head to college and has no desire to return there. She fell in love once only to find out he was cheating on her so she left him too.

Audrey forgives him but lets him know she can’t forget what he said and decides they can be friends (no benefits).

As the get to know each other on a friendship basis they become quite close, even Mike’s police officer buddies are hanging around her place of work. It is a cute romance novel; I really enjoyed the story and S.L. Siwik writing. I have rated Just Good Friends a 4 star rating and defiantly would like to read more from the author. I would recommend to any of my friends or followers to grab a copy of Just Good Friends by S.L. Siwik.

Excerpt:

Audrey would have laughed at the line, finding it comical. Under normal circumstances, she would have probably asked if he heard the cheesy line in some poorly written movie. The fact that she was now being held at gun point, and her boss, whom she loathed, would supposedly be her savior, was far from hilarious. Imminent and painful death had a strange way of leeching humor out of a given situation. She needed to make sure she didn’t turn to hysterics out of fear, and cause the robber to become trigger happy, or her few remaining seconds would end even quicker.

The barrel of a gun slammed against her temple, and she kept her eyes on her idiot boss, Mr. Constantine, notorious for trying to argue his way out of everything. Audrey prayed he’d keep his fat mouth shut and hand over the money. The metal pressed against her skin chilled her to the bone, odd since it was ninety-five degrees Fahrenheit outside. She mentally calculated the degrees into Celsius to keep her mind busy and not contemplating her current predicament. Thirty degrees Celsius? No, her math seemed off.

“Any day now!” The man shouted. Audrey heard a clicking sound, the revolver now cocked and aimed at her head. Urine trickled down her inner thighs as hot tears streamed down her face.
“Any last words you want to tell your boss?” The man whispered in her ear.

She didn’t have any particular words for her underpaying, pain-in-the-butt boss, nor did she really have anything to say to her co-workers, waitresses who she never spoke to more than a few moments. What did come to mind, however, was Mike and the sudden, acute regret over never confessing what he meant to her. Tomorrow she would be lying in a coroner’s office, and he’d be left to believe that they were just good friends.

At least she wore a matching black lace bra and panty set. She always feared dying while wearing granny panties, a serious deep-seated fear of hers. During her freshman year at college most teachers made the students fill out ice breaker questions. What’s your biggest fear always made the top of the list. Most people wrote normal stuff: spiders, heights, failing their first semester. Audrey wrote down dying while wearing granny panties. Other students might have laughed, but she knew deep down they thought the same and weren’t brave enough to admit it.

She also wondered if the coroner would be so kind as to omit from the autopsy reports her peeing incident. The truth was too embarrassing to have on permanent record anywhere.

But, right now she was still alive, and she wanted to stay that way. She had to tell Mike once about how he made her fall in love with him. It suddenly became the grossest injustice in the entire universe, even though somehow it was his fault. Maybe all of his absurd idealism had finally rubbed off on her, but he needed to know the truth, because it couldn’t die and be buried with her.
“Why are you doing this?” She asked him as a stalling tactic. Sergeant Scarface sat in the back corner of the restaurant, and with a little bit of luck…

“Why am I doing this?” He asked, slamming the metal into the side of her head. She bit her lip hard to keep from screaming out. That was going to leave a bruise.
“I’ve been cleaning up this town for a while, sweetie. This will be my last job.”

Cleaning up the town… His words triggered in her memory the night lying with Mike spent from their lovemaking as he confessed his frustration at not catching the thief.

“Do you mean house robberies or other stores like this?” She asked trying to draw him out.
“What are you, a reporter?” He shouted.

Mr. Constantine stood in front of them, frozen in fear still not moving.

“Well, it seems your boss doesn’t want to part with the dough. Tough luck for you.”

Religion had never given Audrey any comfort, so she didn’t pray for her soul. It seemed hypocritical to her, since she had never prayed before. Why start now? Instead, Audrey spent what she believed to be her last moments alive thinking about Mike. Every look, every kiss, every gesture ran through her mind since the moment she laid eyes on him like a silent film.

If these were her last seconds of life, she chose to spend them with him.

I love you, Mike.

Bang.

Alpha Girl by Kate Bloomfield - Book Tour

Paranormal Romance
Date Published: April 1, 2013
Book Description:

Best-selling and independent Australian author, Kate Bloomfield, has successfully made a name for herself in the world of self-publishing at just twenty-three years old. Her newest and most precious book yet, Alpha Girl, is a controversial Paranormal Romance between a student and teacher. A book not for those easily offended.

Seventeen year old Rose Goldman is highly unpopular in the little town of Halfway. Ever since the 'attack' when she was a girl, people and animals have been afraid of her. She gets bullied in school, and called 'wet dog' because of the way she smells, despite being extremely hygienic. However, life takes a turn when a new teacher starts at Halfway High. Mr. Stone, the quirky and charismatic English teacher is twice Rose's age, but she feels an unexplainable pull towards him from day one.

Despite her better judgement, Rose pursues a friendship with Mr. Stone, who seems unable to stay away from her.

What is pulling this unlikely pair together?

My Review:

Alpha Girl (Wolfling #1) by Kate Bloomfield
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Alpha Girl is a well written novel; I really enjoyed Kate Bloomfield writing. The characters were developed well I ended up really liking Rose and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. This story was medium length read, easy to read and it flowed smoothly. There were parts where I felt some of the story was a bit rushed, but I found I still really enjoyed the story and enjoyed reading about Rose as she came out of her shell.

Rose is quiet, very shy almost appears to be withdrawn, but as the story moves along we see Rose as a mature young woman, she has more confidence and even comes across bold when she is talking to Mr. Stone. Mr. Stone came across a bit odd and was hard for me to like him knowing he was Rose’s teacher. But the difference here is he doesn't pursue Rose she goes after him.

Her attraction to Mr. Stone was different for me and I wasn't sure I would enjoy this story because of the teacher/student relationship, but as I got to know Rose and remembered that she is an alpha wolf I put it all in perspective. At first they do feel the attraction but both keep the secret of what they are and it holds them back for a short time.

The romance and attraction between Rose and Mr. Stone happens fairly fast and Rose is the instigator in this, there is some sexual content between the two and will say it was written well. All and all the story kept my attention and I really enjoyed Kate’s writing and definitely will read the second book in this series.

I have rated Alpha Girl 3.5 stars. If you like romance, werewolves then this could be a book for you. Stop by and check it out.

Excerpt - Chapter 5

The doors of the library opened, and Mr. Stone entered with a book in his hands. I watched him as he placed it into the ‘returns’ chute at the front desk. I wanted to call out to him, but I was still embarrassed about our last encounter. He must have felt my eyes upon him because his gaze suddenly slid towards me.

The grin that broke across his face was heart melting. He was usually smiling but this was different; he looked genuinely pleased to see me.

He crossed the library, walking towards the desk I was sitting at.

‘Catching up on homework?’ he asked.

I nodded, swallowing hard, as if something was stuck in my throat, preventing me from talking.

‘What are you working on?’ he asked.

I looked down at the textbook that was sprawled in front of me. ‘Math,’ I said.

‘Ah. I’m afraid I can’t help you there,’ he smiled. ‘Math was never my strong suit.’

‘Me either,’ I sighed, leaning back in my chair. ‘I’m terrible at it.’

‘I’m sure you’re not that bad,’ he said, leaning on the back of a chair.

I rifled through my papers, pulling out my most recent math test. I handed it to him and he looked down at the grade written in big red letters.

‘D minus,’ he read. ‘Okay, so maybe you are terrible at it.’

I laughed. ‘It just doesn’t stick with me,’ I admitted.

‘Maybe if you didn’t daydream so much,’ he said, handing the test back to me.

‘I don’t daydream,’ I lied.

He cocked an eyebrow, his expression sardonic. ‘You get this glazed look over your eyes all the time. Sometimes I worry you’re having a stroke.’

I rolled my eyes and continued packing up my books. As I slung the bag over my shoulder, Mr. Stone looked around to make sure we were alone.

‘Can I give you a ride home?’ he asked.

My knees felt weak. ‘Are you sure that’s wise?’

‘Everyone has gone home for the day,’ he replied. ‘I’ll drive around the corner and you can meet me there.’

There was something about his desire for secrecy that made my skin prickle. ‘Okay,’ I agreed.

I left the library before Mr. Stone, who exited a few paces behind me. He walked towards the teacher’s car park as I exited through the front gates.
